Smile Train

B & C 's school is collecting for The Smile Train this week. The kids have activities and competitions all week. Every day this week we are to send them to school with spare change. The first two days I filled some baggies with change for each of them.

Today I suggested that they put some of their own change in baggies to bring in. We talked about what is means to have a cleft and why these children need our help.

I should mention that Ben is a SAVER. He doesn't even want to spend his money on toys because then he won't have any money left (it's such a hard concept). He keeps his money in his ATM and only takes it out so that he can put it back in.

He came downstairs with his baggie FULL of coins and bills. I asked him if he really wanted to donate all of his money. I thought maybe he didn't understand what he was doing.

Ben: Yes, mom, is this enough to fix TWO lips?

Me: Yes. I'm sure it is. That is so thoughtful of you, Ben. I am so proud of you (totally tearing up).

Ben: Good, because I really don't want anyone to make fun of them. I want to fix two lips.

We never even talked about the possibility that anyone would make fun of these children. We had only discussed them not being able to eat or talk well.

Charlie also filled up his baggie with all he had. He is not much a saver, so he didn't have as much as Ben, but he gave it all.

I'm so very proud of Ben and Charlie. They certainly know the true spirit of giving and caring. They are very, very special and I know that the children they help will be thankful to know that someone else cares. Love Grandmama
