Happy Birthday Coop!!

Our amazing little guy turned 1 today! Here's what we love most about Cooper:

The way he gives kisses

He waves to B & C every morning as they get on the bus (and then waves at every bus we see).

He yells "Beeennnnn!!"

How he talks on the phone (or clicker) and says "Yeah, yeah, yeah..."

They way he walks with his chubby little legs.

The dimple on his right cheek.

His temper tantrums. Poor guy, we just laugh.

His warm cheeks when he wakes up from a nap.

How he points his crooked little finger at everything and says "dat."

The way he dances.

How he cuddles and hums in my ear.

The way he laughs at his brothers and sister.

The proud look on his face when he gets on the couch.

He pulls out every Kleenex and blows his nose in each one.

He sticks his tongue out when he is tired or concentrating.

He loves to color and rarely eats the crayons.

Shakes his head when he knows he's doing something he shouldn't.

We love you Coop! Happy 1st birthday little man!

Holy, Holy, Holy....

Ben, Charlie and Luci are CONSTANTLY humming one song or another. For the past few weeks it's been "Mista Bum Busta.....ahhhhh Mista Lova Lova." I have no idea if those are the correct words, but it's probably better that they aren't. Other favorites are "Ezekial's Horse" by One Light Out, and "Shipping off to Boston (TO FIND MY LEG!)" by Dropkick Murphys.

At any rate, the song changes on Fridays. They have mass on Friday mornings, so they sing "Holy, Hooooly, Holllly, Holyyyyyy, Holy......" for the rest of the day.

Yes. We had a mouse. I'm embararrased to post it here, but if I don't then I can't tell you about the funny events that followed.

Mike and Jenny were here and we were just relaxing after the kids went to bed and the little pipsqueek just ran across the hall. Jenny spotted him! He was perfectly comfortable paying our guests a visit.

We scoured the house and cleaned every nook and cranny, but couldn't find him. Mark came back from the store with a small arsenal of gear to catch the mouse.

The mission was a success! The next day Mark declared that we had caught the mouse. Here is the conversation that followed:

Ben: Can we see it?

Mommy: No, honey, it's dead and it's pretty sad to see.

(A few minutes go by while the kids are deep in thought......)

Ben: I think I should see it, mom. I need to say a prayer for him.

Day Off

Today the kids were off school for Martin Luther King Day. They stayed in their pajamas all day! They took baths/showers and put clean pajamas right back on. Ben, Charlie and Luci played school and vacation with their 8 million stuffed animals and I took advantage of the alone time with Cooper to snap some pics. for his 1st birthday.

Charlie

Ben

Happy Birthday Ben and Charlie!

The boys woke up this morning and opened their presents from us. New lego sets and a pitching machine. Mark took them out for breakfast at Lumes (I stayed behind with Cooper who ran a fever last night) and they served them birthday cake for desert!

They headed over to their floor hockey game. Ben scored one goal and Charlie scored two!!

We are having their birthday party in the summer so that they can have a big pool party with all of their family and friends.

About this time 6 years ago....

I was in labor with B & C. We dropped off Bob with our neighbors, Don and Dan, and headed into to SF. as we drove out of our neighborhood Don and Dan poured themselves some wine and toasted to us from their porch.

Mark was driving like a maniac and drove right up and down California St. (very steep hill in San Francisco) instead of taking Sacramento like a sane person would do. That was a huge mistake for a nervous lady in labor. He must have seen too many sitcoms where the dad was in a mad rush to make it to the hospital before the baby is born in the car.

Ben and Charlie were born the next day in a quite eventful and scary delivery. Charlie came out without hitch, but Ben was breech and his arm was stuck behind his head. His heart rate dropped and he wasn't getting oxygen. There was a nurse on top of me trying to push him out and a few doctors were trying to pull him out. Out of nowhere came this HUMONGOUS doctor. He reached right in and yanked Ben out by the feet with one pull. Then he took off his gloves and walked right back out the door. I never did see him again. We joke that he was probably a janitor or hospital tug-of-war champ.

Ben was limp and purple and the room went silent. He was resuscitated and intubated and sent to the NICU. He had been without oxygen for 11 minutes, but his blood/gas levels tested completely normal, which was a miracle. Aside from some black and blue legs and feet and a broken collar bone, he was totally normal and healthy.

We left the hospital 1 week later with two very sweet (and very colicky) little boys. It's been an adventure ever since!!

Today they are just amazing little human beings.

Charlie is very sensitive and caring. He is in-tune with the feelings of everyone around him. He loves babies and animals. Other kids are just drawn to him. He has lots of friends!

He's a natural in soccer, football, and really any sport you throw his way. He is very strategic in sports like soccer. He can predict where the ball is going and block or pass it before anyone else sees it coming. He is extremely competitive, which can sometimes be a problem because he is very hard on himself. It is great to see the determination in him though.

He loves to build with Legos, play on his Leapster, VSmile, or Grandmama's Wii. He plays with Transformers, Star Wars Guys, Superheros, Webkinz and even his stuffed animals. He'll even play babies or dollhouse with Luci (and really enjoys it!). He also loves to read, paint and color.

Ben is a funny guy. He is very witty for a 6 year old, but if you don't pay attention, you might miss it. He also has lots of friends and loves to get them going in imaginative play like Superheroes, Circus, or "going on vacation." He loves to sing and dance and while I wouldn't label him as a prodigy, he is quite funny to watch.

He loves soccer, football, floor hockey, tennis, karate.... He was one of the lead scorers on their soccer team, which we did not expect because he's not terribly competitive. He would just get the ball (usually from Charlie) and bee-line to the goal. No kid could catch him. The very first time he did this he started barking like a dog as he ran across the field to the goal. Later we asked him why he did that and he said he didn't know. I guess he was just too excited!

Learning comes very naturally to him. He just "gets" things the first time around. This is different from Charlie, who is also very smart, but Charlie tries very hard at learning. Ben just knows stuff.

He is obsessed with Legos and building anything. We have Lego structures all over our house on every available shelf space. We also find sculptures built of hangers, paper clips, string, and whatever else he can think of.

The best part is that B & C are best friends. They love each other and get lost in their own world when they play together. They fall asleep talking to each other every night. I love that!

Superman all wet

Superman (aka Ben) flexing his Superman strength on a rainy spring day.
No fear man.

Ballet Day

Luci has ballet on Friday. Love LOVES it. There are about 8 little girls in her class and a very sweet teacher named Miss Katie. She always plays princess music and the girls are mesmerized by her.

After Ballet, we go to Noodles and Co. for lunch. We have the same meal every week. Japanese Pan Noodles for Mommy (6 WW points if any one is counting) and awesome Mac-N-Cheese for Luci and Cooper (about 8 million points).

Then we take a walk down to Starbucks for Cookies and a Latte for Mommy.

Sorry that the picture isn't that great. I had to take it through a window/mirror.

when pigs can fly...

Charlie, chillin' in the back yard with the west winds sailing his 3 pigs high.

American Idol

The boys and I love to watch American Idol together. Here is their favorite contestant so far:

Luci got her hair cut.

Today I took Luci to get a hair cut. It needed to be evened out. A little history:

We let our children use scissors (not Cooper of course). Luci loves to cut. She will spend hours cutting paper into confetti and then putting it in little baggies to "give to Mrs. Carolyn." I have no idea why she thinks Carolyn would want these shreds, but I'm sure Carolyn would act excited (she's nice like that) if we ever delivered them to her.

We have spent much time going over the rules of scissors. Only cut paper- not clothes, not hair, not people. Don't run with scissors. Don't leave scissors where Cooper can get them....

The other day I notice a little chunk out of Luci's hair in the front. Here is the conversation that followed:

Me: Luci, who cut your hair?

Luci: My friend at school.

Me: You haven't been to school, so how did that happen?

Luci: Bencharlie (said as one name) did it.

Me: I don't think so. Ben and Charlie are big boys and they would NEVER cut hair. They only cut paper. Did you cut your hair?

Luci: Well (looking guilty)......I couldn't see.

I guess it seemed like a good enough solution for her. Mark later found one big red curl under the table where she was sitting :(

Hide-N-Seek

Luci, Cooper and I played Hide and Seek today. Actually, I would count, Luci hid under Cooper's Bed (every time), and I put laundry away while walking around the room "looking" for her. Then she got mad because Cooper figured out how to get in her hiding spot.

Purple Baby

This is Luci with her 2nd favorite baby (I'll get a picture of her favorite one later). She takes her everywhere and is a very good mommy to her.

Luci named her "purple baby." Why Purple Baby? Because that's the only thing that differentiates her from all of the babies dressed in pink, of course.

I love the way children see.

Isn't this classy?

Cooper is obsessed with these things. He pulls them off, turns his little bum around and tries to stick his chubby legs down the hole.

Where does he think he's going? He gets very frustrated because I stop him every time. I was worried because he'll either disappear to vent land or cut himself on the sharp corners.

This was my only solution today. Duct tape! Fixes everything. Mark is not going to like the way this looks! Wait 'til he gets home...

Like Father, Like Son

A totally spontaneous moment from Thanksgiving.

My kids aren't always cute.

Thank you all so much for your kind words about our kids. We think they are pretty cute too.

Uncle Tom sent me a very kind note complimenting the beauty of our children. It was a bit over-the-top, so I feel the need to come clean on a couple things.

While I'd like to attribute their cuteness on their stellar genes, I don't think I can. I will, however, take credit for the painstaking work I do to get them scrubbed, combed, and dressed every morning.

I mean, it must take a pretty spectacular mom to turn this:

into this:

every morning.

Just in case you were thinking that our family looked a little too angelic, take a look at this:

Do you Cha Cha?

I am fascinated with this. Text a question to chacha (242242) on your cell phone. You'll get an answer back from a live person in minutes.

We were out to dinner the other night and I wanted to know the nutritional value of a Reuben, within minutes I had an answer at my finger tips (over 7oo calories - ughhhh!).

Cooper Duper

He is so cute! I love this age . He hasn't quite figured out how to have a temper tantrum yet and he loves being near me :)

The Camera Post

I have heard from so many friends and family since the blog started. I love it!

The most popular question is, "What kind of camera do you have?"

I have this camera

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

:

and these lenses:

Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens

Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM Autofocus Lens

The links are all to B & H Photo, which I love. Great prices and great service.

Now, it is a beautiful camera and takes excellent pictures, but there is a bit of a learning curve. In order to take advantage of all the camera has to offer, I had to learn to shoot in manual mode. I also LOVE the look of natural light photography and I'm still learning how to improve with that. Here is a great book that helps me a lot:

If you don't want to deal with the technical aspects of photography and/or don't want to spend a boatload of money, Canon also makes some great point and shoot cameras. Here are some other great cameras that we have used (priced high to low):

Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera

Canon Powershot S5 IS Digital Camera (awesome video mode on this - see the Bongo post)

Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph Digital Camera (Silver)

Who needs toys?

Ben the ladies' man

A few months ago I hear that Ben has a girlfriend (we'll call her "M") on his soccer team. I ask him about it and according to him, this is how it went down:

Ben: Do you want to be my girlfriend?

M: Sure, if you pass me the ball.

Ben: Yeah, OK.

Here is Luci!

Luci was looking through the blog and was more than a little upset that there were no pictures of her here. Here you go sweet girl!

(pictures taken after her bath last week)

Coop's first steps

Cooper is up to 5-6 steps in a row. He really prefers crawling and always acts surprised after he's taken a few steps. Like, "Oh shoot; I did it again. I'd better get down and crawl."

Honestly, his feet are such pudgy round balls. His walking defies physics.
